  • The Beach Course: Classic Hawaii Golf

The Beach Course is a study in color and contrast, its wide swaths of emerald-green boldly marked by unforgiving black lava, splashed with unabashed tropical flowers and bordered by the beautiful blues of lakes and vast Pacific.

  • The Kings' Course: Along the path of history

A very long time ago, the volcano erupted with force, pouring red, molten lava down the mountainside, burning and blackening the coastlands. Black rock remains, in mounds of jagged a'a, and abstract swirls of fast-moving pahoehoe.

    Waikoloa Golf

The Kohala Coast is renowned for its lava-strewn terrain that leads down to sandy beaches lined with swaying palm trees. Waikoloa Golf Club takes full advantage of this distinguishing terrain.

Two distinct golf experiences await players here, the Beach and Kings’ courses. No matter your skill level, you’ll enjoy both of these strong and scenic layouts, designed by two of the biggest names in the golf design industry, Robert Trent Jones II and Tom Weiskopf. Crafted in the middle of ancient lava flows from nearby Mauna Loa, both designers used the rocky landscape creatively, with many fairways bordered by lava fields, and several greens surrounded with lava rock walls.

The courses are so unique and different from what players find at home, they often decide to book a second round once they’ve had a first taste. A tee time here is something you won’t soon forget!

  • The Beach Course: Classic Hawaii Golf

Opened in 1981, the Robert Trent Jones II-designed Beach Course is Big Island Golf at its finest. A classic resort-style layout, it won’t beat you up with length, better players will appreciate the strategic shot values required, and everyone will thrill at its beauty.

Mid-handicappers will tee it up from the 5,958-yard white markers (men) or the 5,122-yard red tees (women), where generous fairways will keep the ball in play with the driver. Low-lipped bunkers and large greens also add to the chances for a good score on the Beach Course.7th hole beach course

But what makes the Beach Course one of the most popular on Hawaii Island is the amazing views, particularly as players reach No. 7 tee box. The Pacific Ocean is straight before you, while lava fields border the fairway on the left and right. A good tee ball should find the wide fairway, but beware, the wind can blow harder here by the shoreline than elsewhere on the course, so aim wisely. From the landing zone, the par-5 hole doglegs hard left, and a smart layup will leave you a short wedge to a putting surface ringed by swaying coconut palms and crashing waves. Putt out for par and then pose for a selfie with your companions on this most scenic hole.

Throughout this enjoyable course, designer Jones made creative use of lava and water, taking into account the prevailing trade winds. Better players have the opportunity to go low and make birdies, but families and new golfers will also enjoy the course for the sheer fun it allows.
